This list represents Evokako’s effort to draw a picture of the enormous world of organizations now easy to learn about via the internet. We include large multi-national organizations as well as creative and interesting small projects. Where information was available, we have included the organization’s role in FRY or the Southeast Europe region. Humanitarian Aid American Refugee Committee www.archq.org Independent, non-profit humanitarian organization focusing on refugees in many regions including Serbia and Montenegro. ARC has several field offices throughout the region; its Serbian headquarters is in Belgrade. These field offices service refugees from Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosovo at collective centers. The articles and interviews about the situation of refugees in Serbia is one of the site’s best features. AmeriCares www.americares.org This nonprofit disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization specializes in immediate response to disasters and in long-term healthcare programs. CARE www.care.org Its mission is to develop long-term solutions to poverty. Care’s operations in Serbia and Montenegro began in 1994. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) www.catholicrelief.org A humanitarian aid organization with offices in Belgrade and Podgorica. It aims to assist all vulnerable communities. CRS/FRY provides food, support to displaced persons, and educational projects. Church World Services www.churchworldservice.org This faith-based humanitarian organization focuses in FRY on refugee services. The website contains educational materials, often with a religious orientation, to teach children about world hunger and other world social issues. European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) http://europa.eu.int/comm/echo/en2/index.html European Union projects, actions, speeches. Its country reports include FRY. Global Volunteer Network http://www.volunteer.org.nz/ We place volunteers in community projects worldwide, including Alaska, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ghana, Nepal, New Zealand, Romania, Uganda, and Vietnam. Our vision is to support the work of local community organizations in developing countries through the placement of international volunteers. Habitat for Humanity www.habitat.org A worldwide organization that helps communities-in-need build homes at no-profit, interest-free rates. In exchange for Habitat’s homes at low-cost, families and other community volunteers assist with the labor of building these homes. The website includes information about current and past efforts, how to participate, special building programs for women, and environmentally-sound building principles. Handicap International www.handicap-international.org Operates world-wide programs of assistance for the handicapped, including in FRY. Programs provide inexpensive prostheses, therapy, and socio-economic survival strategies. The organization also assists in the re-integration of the handicapped into their communities. International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) www.iocc.org The website describes the programs and mission of the organization, including its work in southeast Europe and around the world. The organization provides emergency aid, assistance to refugee and small-scale economic development and agricultural programs. It has offices in Belgrade, Banja Luka, and Podgorica. International Rescue Committee (IRC) www.intrescom.org A non-sectarian relief organization, IRC provides basic needs and services to the large refugee populations in FRY and other countries in the region. It renovates and supplies housing, coordinates with local NGOs that support refugees, and supplys micro-loans to support self-sufficiency programs. With IRC offices in Croatia, IRC-FRY is assisting the return of some refugee families to Croatia. Save the Children www.savethechildren.org This humanitarian organization addresses the needs of children in regions of war and natural disaster as well as in the developing world. It conducts sponsorship programs, disaster relief, and refugee programs. Programs in FRY include refugee assistance, NGO training, health and education projects. International Foundations The Ford Foundation www.fordfound.org Stresses innovative support and solutions for long-standing social, economic, and political problems around the world. Its program areas include community development, human rights and civil society as well as education, media and the arts. Fund for an Open Society--Yugoslavia www.fosyu.org Although not strictly an international foundation, this is the Yugoslav national foundation of the Soros Network. It supports education, science and health, culture and communities. The website contains detailed information about its programs, Open Clubs and activities. It also has a very good links page. Charles Stewart Mott Foundation www.mott.org Offers education, civil society, and environmental grants. The foundation gave over $12 million to Russia and Central and Eastern Europe in 1999. It especially promotes programs to combat public apathy and to build volunteerism. Netaid www.netaid.org A foundation using the internet and a variety of worldwide partnerships to create an online giving program. Its mission is to support programs directed at extreme poverty. Netaid supports Refugee Trust, an organization serving the Serb and Roma populations in Kosovo and Montenegro. It also offers useful opportunities to volunteer online and its listings include many interesting organizations and projects not routinely mentioned elsewhere. Rotary Foundation www.rotary.org Provides humanitarian support and sponsors educational programs, including student, teacher and professional exchanges to further its mission of promoting global understanding. There are several Rotary Clubs in Serbia and Montenegro which have carried out relief efforts in the last decade through the help of other Rotary Clubs around the world. Project support is also available through local clubs and through Rotary International. Sabre Foundation www.sabre.org Features book distribution and library development programs. Its book donation project has long focused on Eastern Europe, along with other parts of the world. Some of its library development programs can be accessed by librarians via internet workshops. Soros Foundations Network www.soros.org The home site/portal to the many projects, grants, and partnerships connected to the organization founded by financier-philanthropist George Soros. The well-known Open Society programs can be accessed here. There is also much information about the foundation’s on-going and past projects in Serbia, Montenegro, and the southeast European region. Virtual Foundation www.virtualfoundation.org An online philanthropy program which posts community development projects from around the world. It is especially interested in supporting projects that promote cooperation across ethnic and national boundaries. Through consortium member offices in several countries, individuals and small groups also have the opportunity to present their iniatives to a global audience for support. NGO & Civil Society Resources Center for Democracy and Technology www.cdt.org Activist site dedicated to free speech and privacy issues in the digital age. Includes news on censorship and privacy and covers current legal issues around the world. CDT promotes on-line democracy, research, and public awareness. Among its numerous archived publications is the extensive report, “Bridging the Digital Divide:Internet Access in Central and Eastern Europe.” The report includes information about Serbia and neighboring regions. Changemakers www.changemakers.net A website for social entrepreneurs, people around the world putting their ideas for social change into action. Education, the environment, women's issues, human rights, rural and community development are just some of the areas covered on this site. There's also a journal profiling those working at a variety of social projects, a library of resources, and many pages of interest to project directors and NGOs. Commission on the Advancement of Women (CAW) www.interaction.org/caw Created by the organization, Interaction, CAW promotes gender equality and implements the organization’s stated Platform for Action from the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Workshops, seminars, publications, and peer learning are offered to Interaction members. The website also offers a rich source of links on women’s issues. Ecolinks www.ecolinks.org An initiative of USAID, Ecolinks works to solve environmental problems in Central/Eastern Europe and Eurasia by establishing relationships between businesses, governments and organizations in these regions and the US. Market-based solutions, information transfer, trade and investment, and information technology are some of the primary themes of this program. Global Development Research Center www.gdrc.org A virtual organization headquartered in Japan, GDRC emphasizes development programs and approaches that are individual- and community-based. It hosts the NGO Cafe as well as offering resources on a variety of global development themes, such as the environment, gender and technology. Independent Sector (IS) www.independentsector.org A coalition of US non-profits form this organization. Though the website focuses mainly on US domestic NGO issues, the links, resources, and Non-Profit Information Center featured here have wider application for NGOs in any country. Search under “international” for numerous resources and articles of interest. Institutional Reform and the Informal Sector (IRIS) www.iris.umd.edu An organization dedicated to a variety of economic projects in Eastern Europe and the Balkans, among other regions. The primary focus is on institution building; to that end IRIS conducts workshops, conferences and research. Interaction/American Council for Voluntary International Action www.interaction.org A membership coalition of over 150 US non-profit organizations working abroad, mainly on development and on refugee and disaster relief. The website contains information about human assistance and development issues, publications, and women’s issues. International City/County Management Association www.icma.org A municiple development and urban management organization, ICMA has been awarded grants, contracts and cooperative agreements around the world, including in Eastern Europe. It functions as both a professional and educational organization with international projects covering housing issues as well as helping cities implement the practices of open government. National Democratic Institute for Democratic Affairs (NDI) www.ndi.org A non-profit organization working to extend democracy worldwide, especially by coordinating efforts with civic and political leaders. NDI focuses especially on such issues as citizen participation and governance. NGO Cafe www.gdrc.org/ngo/index.html A well-managed source of information for NGOs at any stage, from start-up to routine planning and management. The website also includes articles and studies on a variety of NGO issues. NGOnet www.ngonet.org This website for NGOs in Eastern and Central Europe serves both funders looking for projects and grantees looking for funds, partnerships and general information. Constantly updated, the website provides NGO databases, funding guidelines and an enormous list of valuable links. Partners for Democratic Change www.partners-intl.org An international organization focusing on local civil society development. Typically it sets up centers to conduct training programs, mediation services and community projects. World Learning www.worldlearning.org Offers educational programs in development fields in the US. In addition, it conducts a variety of civil society programs around the world, often working collaboratively with other international organizations and with local, existing NGOs. These programs focus on education, training, institutional capacity and technical assistance. World Learning also supports the Star Network’s Women’s Leadership Program for Democratic Change in Southeast Europe.
